Are you tired of saying that you want to get healthy and lose some weight only to find yourself quickly giving up and back to old habits? Maybe you are afraid to even start because you believe you will only fail again. Maybe you’re just stuck and nothing seems to be working to move you forward. It’s time to take a step, even if it’s just a baby step in the direction of progress and victory. That step starts with owning your part, no matter how big or small. Change begins with taking responsibility for your part in the struggle. As you take responsibility for your part and own it, you will begin to gain clarity in this area of your life. With clarity you are able to make better decisions and with better decisions you can move forward into a better, healthier future.
So what does owning your part all entail? You start with taking the time to evaluate your current lifestyle and the impact it is having on your weight and health. If you continue on this same path, where will you be a year from now, five years or even ten years from now. Get real honest with yourself. If you don’t think you can be honest with yourself, that is something you must own and then ask for help in seeing the reality of how your current lifestyle is affecting your ability to be healthy or to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Owning your part could mean coming clean on all the ways you try to blame, rationalize, explain, excuse and convince yourself why you are not making progress. There will always be things that come up that will try and distract us from making the healthiest choice for our body and life, just be honest with yourself and own the choice you made, good or bad, and recognize that it comes with consequences, good and bad. Every choice is moving you towards, or away from your goal, so every choice is important, even if it seems insignificant at the time.
Owning your part could mean admitting that you have some wrong beliefs about healthy living. Maybe, deep down you believe that exercise and eating healthy will be miserable and you will never have any more fun in life. Maybe you believe it has to be all or nothing and since you don’t have the strength to be perfect, you don’t even try. Maybe you believe all exercise is painful and unenjoyable and healthy food is boring and depriving. If these are your beliefs, why would you ever want to live a healthy lifestyle? Perhaps the lies you are believing are ones from other people who told you would always be this way or they made fun of you. These beliefs have now become your identity. Own the fact that you need some new beliefs around food and exercise, because your actions will always align with what you believe. Own the fact you have not been taking your cues about who you are from the One who made you and loves you.
Owning your part could mean admitting that you can’t do it alone and you need accountability and partners to help motivate you and keep you going when you want to quit. Owning your part could be admitting you need God’s help and it is time to surrender your control and trust the One who has the power and desire to help you. Owning your part could mean allowing God to shine truth in your heart about how food has taken His place in times of stress, worry, fears or loneliness.
Owning your part can be hard. It’s emotional and sometimes it can be embarrassing, but until we are willing to take the time to OWN IT we are setting ourselves up for repeat performance. We will continue to smuggle our bad habits into the future and risk sabotaging future progress. Give yourself this gift of taking the time to evaluate these things in your life and own your part of what you find. You just might find that next time can be better than last time.
